Sport Huancayo
Team history
List of Sport Huancayo seasons
The club was founded on February 7, 2007, in the district of El Tambo, Huancayo province, Junín department, Peru. It changed its name from what was previously ``Club La Huancaína`` to ``Sport Huancayo`` due to the team`s affection and identification with the city. The first leadership team was composed of Luis Orellana, Gonzalo Castillón, Edilberto Cachuán, Henry Pocomucha, and Raúl Rojas, who committed to serious and planned work. With the 2008 Copa Perú championship in mind, they decided to make a major investment, with Hilos Manchete and Agua Santista as their main sponsors.
The club won the district stage of the Copa Perú and advanced to the provincial stage under coach Mifflin Bermúdez, who was removed on July 15 due to non-sporting reasons before the departmental stage. During these critical moments for the club`s interests, José Ramirez Cuba, a highly experienced coach in the Copa Perú, took over as coach on July 1st, bringing stability to the team.
For the 2010 season, coach Rafael Castillo was hired to replace Paraguayan Cristóbal Cubilla. After 19 matches of the 2010 Decentralized Championship, coach Rafael Castillo was dismissed due to poor performance. Paraguayan Cristóbal Cubilla took over the reins of the team again. In the 2010 Copa Sudamericana, the team lost in Uruguay to Defensor Sporting Club by 9 goals to 0, the largest scoreline in the tournament`s history. In the second leg, as scheduled, Sport Huancayo defeated Defensor Sporting 2-0 at home, eliminating them from the international competition.
